Smokin' Poll

A few new polls have come come out recently that could, but probably won't, reshape the current discourse on the Middle East:

1) Gallup has released the results of an incredibly large scale poll which argues that only seven percent of Muslims supported the 9/11 attacks. Furthermore, those that did support the attacks tended to give political rather than religious justifications. Now that might still be just over one hundred thousand people, but not quite the barbarian hordes at the gatse scenario some tend to promote. The full report will come out in a forthcoming study. Here are some more fun facts from the study:

* Muslims and Americans are equally likely to reject attacks on civilians as morally unjustifiable.
* Large majorities of Muslims would guarantee free speech if it were up to them to write a new constitution AND they say religious leaders should have no direct role in drafting that constitution.
* Muslims around the world say that what they LEAST admire about the West is its perceived moral decay and breakdown of traditional values -- the same answers that Americans themselves give when asked this question.

2) Another poll sheds light on the disconnect between how we talk about Palestine-Israel in the USA and in Israel. Sixty-four percent of Israelis say the government must hold direct talks with the Hamas government in Gaza toward a cease-fire and the release of captive soldier Gilad Shalit. This even includes forty eight percent of Likud party members. If the majority of Israel is okay with it, why is it anathema for the USA?

Of course this is all because everyone realizes the coup that is about to happen in the next presidential election....the inevitable election of a secret Muslim. Yep, it doesn't matter if it is Clinton, Obama or McCain, they are all seeeeecret Muslims.

That seven percent that approved of the 9/11 attack and did so mainly on political grounds is interesting. Certainly this does not match worldwide perceptions. I have to question that on the basis of what has happened in France as the riots, supposedly economically based, were severe with a mass turn out of support by the "Muslim Street". Add to that what we see from demonstrations in the Middle East and a 100 thousand number seems significantly off target. Was the Gallup pole done in the US only? If we have 100,000 Muslims in this country who think 9/11 was a good thnig for whatever reason, we have big, big trouble. I admit to being unsure and somewhat confused. I support potential worst case views as I am a conservative at heart on threat analysis issues and I was a Boy Scout, always "Be Prepared." I do not know why the free media in the West would consciously create a myth that the problem is much greater than it really is. To sell more newspapers? Sounds shallow, don't you think? Certainly it would be in the best interest of the left leaning media to minimize the issue to attack our current right leaning executive branch. Interesting. The idea that Muslims would prefer a "Church/State" dicodemy is encouraging. I would love to believe that number. Yet, the few have always controlled the many in totalitarian states and the Islamic world is predominately totalitarian as we speak. They have a way to go in the modernity race, but we will pray that they get there. Democracy is most fragile. Note what Chavez has been able to do in Venezuala in short order. He is gradually creating a dictatorship of sorts. He was thwarted with some of his constitutional rewrites this last election cycle, but he is still trying and may succeed in making his presidency permanent.Ignorance is the greatest vice humanity has. The honest search for truth in a peaceful way is something that all societies would benefit from. As for our next president; if Hillary wins the democratic nomination McCain will be our next president. If Obama wins the democratic knod, then it will be Obama for sure. He is too far left for me, so I will vote for John, but it perhaps is time for us to break the racial ceiling regarding our presidency and Mr. Obama is qualified, dignified, and would do honor to the office. We in Minnesota suffered and survived four years of "Jesse the Body/Mind Ventura" with little long term damage. I would not link Mr. Obama to Mr. Ventura what so ever as Mr. Obama is many heads taller in every area than our former governor. My point is that we should be willing to risk and accept Mr. Obama if he is our nation's choice and help he be the best President he can be. It would go a long way to healing some bitter wounds suffered in America's history. It would be good, very good to see an African American as president, particularly a man.
