Thank you Powell

Posted by Andrew |

It is about time somewhat said this. My respect for General Colin Powell just skyrocketed - not because of his endorsement for Obama - but for his willingness to stand up to others who have been using "Muslim" as a slur throughout the campaign.

He stated his concern more eloquently than I can, so watch the video for yourself. His comments on Muslims are from 4:30 forward.

I've always liked and respected Secretary Powell. He has been a very committed patriot his entire life and is most gracious. He has severed his country well and our current President too. I would have voted for him in 1996 and 2000 had he chosen to run. I would have worked for him. I have always wondered why he didn't take the job. It would have been handed to him on a silver plater in 1996. He could have had it in 2000 but it would have been harder. On the surface the word is that his wife was too afraid for him and he respected her wishes. That may be part of it, but I think too, though he is a quintessential politician, that actually running for office to him was degrading. There is something about his personality that is anathema to that process. His comments on Muslims are certainly to the point and correct. I am, however, proud of our nation that there has been so little violence directed towards Muslims in general. I know there are fears and that there are very phobic types who do spew venom, but they do that same thing to Native Americans, African Americans, Mong and the like. I do feel badly for Muslims and people who are from Arabic and Islamic lands that they feel conscieous of a "typing." Sadly, that is part of the human condition to some extent and one can not ignore the physical facts that the 9/11 terrorists were Arabic, Muslims and men. I am reading "Shaking Hands With The Devil" by Romeo Dallarier the UN Commanding general in Rawanda during the 1994 genocide. Now that is a case of "typing" and "ethnic prejudice" for sure. Our nation stands tall, though we are capable of evil, and we must vigorously defend against ethic division and some forms of profiling. I am thankful for the "liberal" influence in this area of social change. In this arena liberal teachings have been the greatest of blessings to the American people in general and the world.
