Aftermath of Egypt-Algerian Match

Posted by Andrew |

Below is a video taken in Borsa in downtown Cairo last night, right after Egypt won the match against Algeria. Because of the win, Egypt has a second chance to beat Algeria to qualify for the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

I'll post some more photos and videos later.

Andrew, so glad you won... I guess. What could have happened if they had lost? The poor Algerians would have been murdered! Some comments: 1. War and Hell certainly are concepts, when applied to a soccer game between marginal teems, seems a "bit over the top." "Can't we all just get along?"
2. Using aerosol cans as flame throwers is dangerous to the extreme! OSHA would shut them down here in the U.S. I bail on concerts when folks start lighting lighters.
3. Considering that alcohol is not served in Egypt as liberally as in the U.S.A. I think it amazing that they can get such good street riots going.
4. Sadly, and this is a serious comment, I didn't see in any of the YouTube videos many women present. The women I did see in the stadium appeared to be European. On the streets celebrating there were absolutely none. Is it true that there are few Egyptian women who attend such events? Is it, like the street cafes that we went to, predominantly a male dominated social event?

I could see getting fired up about the World Series with the Cubs in it, or Super Bowl with the Broncos taking on the Bears, or the NBA playoffs with the Nuggets taking on the Bulls in the seventh game, but soccer against Algeria... NOT! LOL

Hope you got out safely. Hope you didn't lose any close friends.

It was definitely a crazy and enjoyable match, that will be repeated this Wednesday, but in Sudan.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by how many woman, children and families I did see in the street. I expected it to be all men. This has changed in the last five years or so, with some women going to the stadiums and cafes to watch the games. However, the ratio is still vastly in favor of men.
