I get discouraged with some of the younger generation. "It's just somebody's shrubs, I don't give a ____." I would have hoped, though I have little reason to hope, that someone in that group had called the fire department. I think I heard the word shit about six times in the moronic dialogue. That the power lines would be damaged, that the tree would be destroyed, that observes could be electrocuted, that firemen would be endangered, that homes could be destroyed seemed of no importance to those taking the time to video the sight for YouTube. I had this exact scenario occur in the back yard of my neighbor's home last summer. My reaction, and that of my fellow neighbors, was to contact the fire department right away. We then made sure no one came close to the "hot spot" by mistake, and we directed the firemen to the utility pole showing them exactly where the initial contact point was. By the time they arrived the fire had compromised the transformer and the lines making the situation dangerous for all. Our advanced call allowed the utility company to cut power to the sight before any firemen were put in harms way. The fire was caused by a squirrel who chewed through a line, killing itself in the process, and igniting the too close tree. The final result of that event was that this summer all power lines on our block were buried eliminating the possibility that this will happen again... and it will keep our "beautiful trees and squirrels" from being destroyed. At no time did I hear such inane conversation, nor did anyone go out and find a video camera. Also, there were no young people there. I guess the difference is that we chose to engage the situation constructively, to be part of the event and life. The young folks watching the pine tree burn can only see themselves as "observers." Sad, I think.
