News Round up - Banksy, Breast Milk and Broun

  • During this year's Oscars in Los Angeles, a film other than The King's Speech with English ties is vying for one of Hollywood's top honours. But unlike the film stars on the red carpet, you might never see its director who has been shortlisted for his documentary. He is known worldwide as the incognito graffiti artist Banksy.

  • Professor Ahmet Doğan, whose 19-year-old son Furkan was killed aboard during the Israeli army raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla from Turkey in May, is in Washington in an attempt to convince American officials to open an investigation into the raid. Furkan was an American citizen who was born in the U.S. His father will be meeting with Congress members Tuesday and on Wednesday speak with members of the State Department and the Ministry of Justice.

  • ** I'll take 2 quarts ** Well this is certainly a new flavor. The London shop "Icecreamists" is certainly taking dessert to the extreme. This time, it's breast milk ice cream. Human breast milk might not sound delicious, but the "treat" will go on sale Friday, according to BBC, and it won't come cheap.

  • The Athens Banner-Herald in Georgia reports that a shocking question was asked at a town hall event held by Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) on Tuesday. According to the article, an audience member asked the congressman, "Who is going to shoot Obama?"

  • ** Please, for the love of God, no one even think about voting for this clown ** Mike Huckabee made a great argument for gay marriage. The once and perhaps future Republican presidential candidate didn't mean it that way, of course. Actually, he was slamming President Obama's decision to stop defending the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.

  • A large part of that dream was realized Feb. 12, when the president stepped down, leaving Egypt to reshape itself under the guidance of its most trusted institution, the military. A delirium of joy echoed across Egypt and into corners of the broader Arab world, even though it is still unclear how far the military will lead Egypt toward full democracy. Also unclear are the implications of Egypt’s example for other repressive regimes. Nevertheless, even before Mr. Mubarak quit, Egyptians in the square sensed that they were making a fundamental break with the past. The thousands who gathered there were demanding to be treated as citizens, not subjects, with rights and a system that allowed them to exercise those rights. This alone was profoundly new.

  • Given all these conditions, a newly elected PLC would only serve to further entrench divisions among Palestinians while also creating the illusion that Palestinian self-governance exists -- and can thrive -- under Israeli occupation.   A decade and a half after its creation, the Palestinian Authority has proved not to be a step toward the "legitimate rights of the Palestinian people," but rather a significant obstacle in the way of achieving them. The PA offers no genuine self-government or protection for Palestinians under occupation, who continue to be victimized, killed, maimed and besieged by Israel with impunity while Israel confiscates and colonizes their land.   The PA never was and cannot be a stand-in for real collective leadership for the Palestinian people as a whole, and PA elections are not a substitute for self-determination.

  • **Someone, please. Put the old man out of his misery!** Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, made an unexpected appearance in Green Square, speaking to a crowd of his supporters. "We can defeat any aggression if necessary and arm the people," Gaddafi said, in footage that was aired Libyan state television on Friday. "You, the youth, be comfortable… dance, sing, stay up all night," he said.
