  • "Hamdeen Sabahi, a leading Egyptian leftwing politician, has announced he will run for president in what is likely to prove a tough race pitting him against Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the defence minister who is now the country’s de facto ruler. Mr Sabahi’s entry into the fray ensures the election, expected in a few months, will not have the appearance of a one-horse race, but Field Marshall Sisi, who was recently publicly authorised by the army to seek the top job, is widely predicted to coast to a resounding victory."
