Mr. Helms goes to Washington

Posted by Andrew |

So I recently returned from two trips to the good old capital of our nation, Washington D.C. One time to visit a good friend, the other for a crappy conference. Things are just done differently on the other side of this country! Here's a couple observations:

1.) Everyone seems informed. I did not once get on a subway and not see every other passenger reading a U.S. News, the Examiner, or some other related political periodical.

2.) I had the joy of arriving the same week as Luis Palau's big hoopla Evangelical outreach conference in the middle of the National Mall. "God is in the house!!! Look at _____ do his triple-backflip for the Lord!!" Reminded me of the movie Saved...

3.) You can measure a man's power by his shoes... nice shoes - nice job. Flip flops...

4.) When stores advertise a large slice of pizza at 3 am in Adam's Morgan... they mean a slice of pizza the size of your head. Seriously!! Don't mess with those pizzas.

5.) Everyone is an intern for an assistant to the assistant director of some non-profit organization.

Despite the abundance of interns and expensive food, D.C. fascinated me. The monuments at night... after a half-bottle of ouzo are spectacular. The metros are quick and easy, and the opportunities are innumerable. You just breathe in a sense of power and importance simply by walking the streets.

Nonetheless, I cannot wait to go back... maybe next time I'll meet some administration members...Rove, Libby, Frist, Delay... There should be some good jail tours by that time
