“Let’s cut to the chase. Let’s just do one amendment that deals with gay illegal immigrants who want abortions at Gitmo.”

Easy to negate someone by such a "sound bite" or quip. Illegal aliens are no small issue. Profound implications for "the rule of law." We are, after all, such a nation. Do we want to descend into the abyss like Iraq, Darfur, Somalia and the like where law is disregarded? Do we wish to simply make all things government can't control legal so they no longer have to?
Though Gitmo is a favorite Democrat talking point and deferring to that issue whenever the discussions get tough seems to help take the people's minds off of real issues, to me the jury is out regarding its efficacy. I saw a "latest photo" of the ring leader of the 9/11 attacks. He is in full Arabic garb, his beard and hair is totally traditional. I am sure he has a Koran at his disposal, is fed Islamic food, and allowed to pray five times daily facing Mecca. He was water boarded and said to have given the authorities valuable information. That has been denied by some, but I recall his second in command being captured in Pakistan shortly after his arrest. The Koran toilet bowl flushing that killed hundreds of Muslims in the streets was a fraudulent story, though even if it was true it doesn't rise to the "high crimes and misdemeanors" level. I'd flush a Koran if I was going to make a political statement, even a Bible. First Amendment and all. Goes to the issue of modernity. At the same time the decision to move the terrorists to New York for a civil trial rings of "grand standing" and at what price? Huge. There will be no greater platform for the terrorist mentalities to express themselves. They finally got what they wanted. Can we execute them? I am not sure. After all our capitol punishment statistics indicate that blacks are disproportionately represented on death row. We must be fair. And, the Arabic guys are certainly not European. The former governor of Illinois stayed the execution of a black man who cut the baby out of the womb of one of your Aunt Kristy's fifth grade students when she had become a grown woman. Killed her other son, killed her, then took the baby and gave it to his girlfriend trying to pass it off as theirs. Couldn't execute him because statistically our system is unfair to blacks. It will be interesting to see if Hilary Clinton and Chuck Schulmer, New York's anti-death penalty senators, will be total hypocrites and demand the death penalty for these guys to bolster their political capital.
Full circle we come to public funds for abortion. Is it just tissue or is it a human being? Are human beings really as valuable as they used to be or has our market price dropped with increased census numbers? Bush was excoriated for being so "unintellectual". Yet, his speech limiting the funding of stem cell research was the singularly deepest and well thought out speeches I have ever heard of from any politician much less a sitting president. He was also the only president to ever say, in a State of the Union speech, that the US is "addicted to oil" and must change. He set the table for Mr. Gore. Thank you very much.
Gays... they are Americans too. At issue is monogamy. They need to look inwards.
