News Round Up - Kingdom, Kuwait and Qatar

Posted by Andrew |

I think Israel should start offering honorary citizenship to US members of Congress (if they haven't done so already), as they clearly care more about the alleged "indefensible 1967 borders" (despite the fact that they were perfectly defensible in '67 and '73), than they do their own constituencies.

Qatar wins the prize this week for actually caring about the Palestinians who have a real stake in those "indefensible borders", despite the fact Qatar has rather strong economic ties with Israel. I'm just waiting for Reid, Hoyer and Graham to put Qatar on the list of terrorism supporting countries for having the audacity to want Palestinians to have land and sustainable food sources...
  • Agricultural projects worth more than $12 million to provide sustainable food security in Palestine have been launched by Qatar Charity (QC). According to a spokesperson for the foundation, the projects will include planting a million fruit trees and land reclamation of around 20,000 acres. The five-year project, part of Qatar Charity's long term strategy for enhancing food security within Palestine, also aims to support the poverty eradication effort.

  • Ousted Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak and his two sons will face trial before a criminal court over the killings of anti-regime protesters and corruption, the official Mena news agency reported.

  • Anne Patterson, former U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, received formal agreement from Egypt to be nominated as the next U.S. ambassador to Egypt, Washington foreign policy hands said today.

  • Israel's military superiority over Jordan and Syria is now much greater than it was in 1956 or 1967, particularly since the loss of Syria's Soviet patron. In any case, it just seems like people ought to at least make some acknowledgment when talking about the defensibility of these borders that these two wars did actually take place, and the borders didn't seem to be much of a problem for Israel.

  • A sailor throws a drowning man a life preserver. How dare you, screams the man. Because of you, people are going to think I can’t swim. That about sums up the relationship between Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu. In a few months, the U.N. General Assembly will vote, probably overwhelmingly, to recognize a Palestinian state along Israel’s 1967 borders. No one knows exactly what will happen after that, but from the Israeli government’s point of view, it won’t be good. According to international law, Israel will be occupying a sovereign nation.

  • Saudi Arabia has delayed municipal elections in the kingdom by a week to allow for National Day celebrations, the head of the election committee said on Saturday. The world's biggest oil exporter announced in March it would hold the vote, in the first political concession since protests sweeping the region reached the kingdom. The elections for half the seats in the country's municipal councils will be postponed to Sept. 29 from September 22, Abdul Rahman al-Dahmash told Reuters.

  • A fistfight erupted in Kuwait's parliament on Wednesday when Sunni Islamist lawmakers exchanged blows with a Shi'ite parliamentarian who labelled Kuwaitis detained in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as terrorists, lawmakers said.
